Dr. William A. Cochrane - Senior Advisor
Dr. Cochrane's accomplishments have earned him national and international recognition,
and led him to some of North America's most influential scientific and corporate roles
in biotechnology.
In 2002, Dr Cochrane received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for his contributions
to biotechnology in Canada and the BioAlberta Association Award for his contributions
in Alberta. In 2001, the Alberta Science and Technology Leadership Awards Foundation
awarded him the Outstanding Contribution to the Alberta Science and Technology Community.
He was again recognized nationally in 1999 with the Ottawa Life Sciences Council National
Merit Award and in 1992, with the 125th Commemorative Medal from the Government of
Canada. In 1977, he received the Queen's Jubilee Medal and in December 1989 he was made
an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Originally a graduate of medicine at the University of Toronto, Dr. Cochrane was Professor
and Head Pediatrics at Dalhousie Medical School in 1963-67 and helped develop the I.W.
Killam Hospital for Children in Halifax. In July 1967 he moved to Alberta, to become
founding Dean of Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine at University of Calgary. In July
1973, he served for a year as Deputy Minister of Health Services in Alberta before being
appointed President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Calgary in 1974. In late
1978, he assumed a business career as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of
Connaught Laboratories Ltd., subsequently acquired by Institute Merieux, Lyon France in 1989.
Dr. Cochrane is President of W.A. Cochrane & Associates Inc., a health products investment
consulting company. He is also a Director of companies including: Immune Vaccine
Technologies Inc. Halifax; Pheromone Sciences Inc., Toronto (Chairman); Medicure Inc.,
Winnipeg; University Technologies International Inc., (Chairman), Calgary; Oncolytics
Biotech Inc., Calgary; Resverlogix Inc., Calgary; and QSV Biologics Inc., Edmonton. He
has also served on the Boards of Monsanto Canada, Connaught Laboratories Ltd., Vasogen
Inc. (Chairman), Fluor/Daniel Canada (Chairman), MDS Capital Corp. and the Banff Centre
(Chairman).
Dr. Stuart Nicholson, M.D. - Clinical Radiologist
Dr. Nicholson received his B.Sc. (Physics) and M.D. from the University of Alberta. Dr. Nicholson
completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Alberta
and the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Quebec. He is a member of a number of medical
societies including the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Alberta
Society of Radiologists. Dr. Nicholson has extensive experience in diagnostic radiology and
was integral in the widespread adoption of ultrasound in Canada. Dr. Nicholson is widely
published and remains clinically active in the areas of echocardiology and fetal/maternal
imaging, in addition to being a clinical associate professor in Radiology at University of
Calgary Medical School.
Dr. Michael Halliwell, Ph.D. - Clinical Investigator
Dr. Halliwell has spent the last 40 years studying and advancing the field of medical
ultrasound imaging. He currently holds the position of Senior Research Fellow at the
University of Bristol Centre for Physics and Engineering in Medicine. Dr. Halliwell
is widely published and recognized internationally as both an expert and thought
leader in ultrasound imaging.
Dr. Nicole Bournias, Ph.D. - Molecular Biologist
Dr. Nicole Bournias received her Ph.D. from the University of Essex, England, in developmental
genetics. Prior to this she obtained Bachelor of Science from the University of California,
Irvine. In addition to her ongoing research programs, she teaches molecular biology, genetics,
and developmental biology at California State University, San Bernardino.
